Social Media And Plastic Surgery
With the advent and dominance of the internet in today’s society, having a digital presence on social media is a must. Thanks to social media it only takes one click to become more than familiar with a business, restaurant, or plastic surgeon. In the case of cosmetic surgery, much of what a patient needs to know about a plastic surgeon should be available on their social media.
Popular procedures and before and after photos are among the most common features of a plastic surgeon’s social media. This means establishing your home page, or profile page, being active with posts and engagement, as well as advertising.
What Social Media Platforms Are Popular For Plastic Surgery
Today, the most popular social media platforms include Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram. While all these social media platforms offer the same advantages, their community guidelines can be quite different.
Facebook remains the most popular amongst older potential cosmetic surgery clients. As such, Facebook is probably an excellent platform to showcase surgeries for the 40s+ and above who may be interested in surgeries such as face and neck lifts, eyelid blepharoplasty, or even brachioplasty (arm lift).
Facebook has one of the most regimented community guidelines that does not allow for any contour outline of the breast or buttock to be exposed.
Instagram is definitely more popular among younger patients so this is a great platform for discussing breast surgery, tummy tucks, liposuction, and body contouring procedures. Instagram is slightly more lenient with its community guidelines. Exposure of the breasts is allowed as long as the nipples are covered and exposure of the buttocks is allowed as long as the intergluteal crease or butt crack is covered.
Ultimately, TikTok is becoming the king, most likely due to its popularity amongst more interactive clients and its more lively platform. TikTok posts are limited to 15 seconds but it does allow for live streaming where clients can interact with you in live time. What makes TikTok posts challenging for plastic surgery is that they do not tolerate any nudity at all; this means no exposure of the breasts or the buttocks. Interestingly, Twitter allows for full nudity. Telegram is the newest social platform set up by Ukrainian entrepreneurs and is unique in that its video platforms have no limitations at all.
Why Is Social Media Important In Plastic Surgery?
It is critical for patients to see a plastic surgeon’s work, as this is normally the most important factor for a patient when choosing a surgeon. Videos and before and after photos are the most helpful content for a prospective patient. However, social media platforms have different community guidelines, which can make it difficult to showcase the full scope of your work. It is important to tailor your content to the social media platform you are using. This also highlights the importance of your home page or website where you can display your work with fewer restrictions.
